What is the difference between personal and business cyber insurance?

Personal cyber insurance covers a person and their household against attacks on private life: online fraud, identity theft, ransomware on a home computer. Business cyber insurance covers a company against attacks on its systems, customers and operations, including breach response and liability. Different insured party, different losses, different underwriting.

Who is insured under each?

A personal policy insures a named person and the household around them. On Syba plans that runs from a single household on the entry plan to the complete family, single-member LLCs and household staff on the upper plans. A business policy insures a legal entity, and the questions it asks are about that entity: its systems, its data, its customers.

Why a company policy cannot be replaced by a personal one

A company holds other people’s data and depends on its systems to earn money. Business cyber policies are written for that: breach notification, regulatory response, lost income while systems are down, claims from customers. A household plan is written for a household. If you run a company with employees or customer records, the business policy is the one built for that exposure.

Single-member LLCs sit in between. Several Syba plans cover a single-member LLC alongside the household, which suits a one-person business run from home. Read the plan’s terms to see what the LLC cover includes.

Why a company policy does not protect your family

The other way round matters as much. Executives and their families are attacked at home, on personal phones and through personal email, outside the company firewall. A company policy responds to the company’s losses. The Cyber Security Breaches Survey (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, 2025) found that just 7% of UK businesses held a policy written specifically for cyber risk; many had cover inside a wider policy, so check what yours includes and whom it names.

How common is each?

Business cover is established. The UK government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, 2025) found 45% of businesses insured against cyber risks in some way, including 62% of small and 65% of medium businesses. Personal cover is the newer product, which is why many households do not know whether anything they already own includes it.

Which one do you need?

Match the policy to what you stand to lose.

  • A household with no business: personal cyber insurance.

  • A sole trader or single-member LLC working from home: a personal plan that names the LLC, or a business policy, depending on how much customer data you hold.

  • A company with staff or customer data: business cyber insurance, plus personal cover for the executives and their families.

  • A family office: personal cover for the principals and household, and a business policy for the office itself.

Questions people ask next

  • Can one policy cover both me and my company?

Not usually. Personal and business policies insure different parties. Some personal plans, including several Syba plans, add single-member LLC cover, which suits a one-person business but is not a replacement for a company policy.

  • Is business cyber insurance more expensive than personal?

Company cover is quoted per company, so there is no list price to compare. Personal plans have published monthly prices, shown on the Syba pricing page.

  • Do executives need personal cyber insurance if the company has a policy?

The company policy responds to the company’s losses. Attacks on executives often start at home or on personal devices, which is why Syba offers personal cover and cyber protection for executives and their families beyond the company firewall.

  • What does the National Cyber Security Centre advise before buying?

It advises checking whether existing policies already include some cyber cover, understanding what the policy covers and excludes, and knowing what must be in place to claim or renew (National Cyber Security Centre, 2020).

  • Where do I start for a company?

Ask for a quote. Syba handles company cover through its broker programme and its company products, each quoted on request.
