What does personal cyber insurance cover, and what does it exclude?
Personal cyber insurance covers losses from a cyber event at home: online fraud, identity theft, ransomware and extortion, data recovery after a breach and cyberbullying support. Higher plans add liability and cryptocurrency cover. It excludes things with no cyber event behind them, like a hard drive that fails on its own. The issued policy decides.
What is covered?
Every Syba plan covers five kinds of event. Higher plans add cyber security and privacy liability. Each responds under the terms of the issued policy, up to the plan’s limit.
| Event | Covered example | Not covered example |
|---|---|---|
| Online fraud and cyber crime | Funds are stolen from your account in an online fraud or cyber attack | A purchase you authorised yourself and later disputed with the merchant |
| Identity theft and recovery | Help with covered losses after your identity is stolen and funds are taken | An identity theft event that began before your coverage started |
| Cyber ransomware and extortion | Ransomware locks a family computer and a ransom demand follows | An extortion threat with no underlying cyber event behind it |
| Cyber breach events and data recovery | Recovering household data lost in a covered cyber breach event | A hard drive that fails on its own, with no cyber event involved |
| Cyber bullying and counseling | Counseling support after a child in the household is targeted by cyberbullying | Disagreements between household members that involve no outside party |
| Cyber security and privacy liability (higher plans) | A privacy liability claim against you that arises from a cyber event in your household | A liability claim that does not arise from a cyber security or privacy event |
What do higher plans add?
Upper plans add third-party cyber liability, cryptocurrency cover (with a sublimit where shown), single-member LLC cover, an assigned Personal Cyber Security Engineer, an online reputation score and data broker deletion for the family. The top plan adds a full audit of all houses. The exact set depends on the plan and the region; the pricing page lists each one.
What does it exclude?
A cyber policy pays for losses caused by a covered cyber event. It does not pay when there is no such event behind the loss, which is what the not-covered examples above show: a merchant dispute over an authorised purchase, a loss that began before cover started, a hardware failure, a threat with nothing behind it.
The full list of exclusions is in the policy documents, stated in your quote and policy. Read the exclusions before you buy, for any insurer.
What conditions apply to a claim?
The National Cyber Security Centre (2020) tells buyers to ask what must be in place to claim against, or renew, a cyber policy. Some policies expect certain security measures to stay active. Ask which ones before you rely on the cover.
What does the policy not do?
It does not prevent an attack. Syba adds the people and tools that lower the chance of one: a 24/7 cyber team you can call about a strange email, text or caller, a browser agent that flags fake sites, breach alerts and monthly training.
Questions people ask next
Does it cover money I sent to a scammer myself?
An authorised payment to a scammer may not be covered. A merchant dispute over an authorised purchase is different from funds stolen in a cyber attack. Check the issued policy wording for what counts as a covered event.
Is identity theft covered?
Yes, in every Syba plan, for losses after your cover starts. An identity theft event that began before coverage started is not covered.
Does it cover ransomware?
Yes. Cyber ransomware and extortion events are covered where a cyber event is behind the demand. A threat with no cyber event behind it is not.
Who in the household is covered?
It depends on the plan, from a single household on the entry plan to the complete family, single-member LLCs and household staff on upper plans, at home and while traveling.
Where are the full exclusions?
In the policy documents. Syba shows the limits and terms in your quote and the issued policy; the coverage page shows each line in plain English.
