Is identity theft protection the same as cyber insurance?

No. Identity theft protection usually watches your personal data and helps you recover after misuse. Personal cyber insurance covers losses across several cyber events, including identity theft, ransomware and extortion, online fraud and data recovery, under the terms of the issued policy. Syba pairs the cover with a 24/7 cyber team, so you get both.

What does identity theft protection usually do?

Identity theft protection services usually focus on one threat: someone using your personal information without your permission. They typically monitor for signs of misuse, alert you, and walk you through recovery steps.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission describes the same recovery path for free at IdentityTheft.gov: you report the theft and get a recovery plan. Monitoring is useful, but it tells you something happened; it does not by itself pay for the loss.

What does personal cyber insurance cover that identity protection does not?

Personal cyber insurance responds to a wider set of attacks on a household, each under the terms of the issued policy. Every Syba plan covers identity theft, cyber ransomware and extortion, online fraud and cyber crime, cyber bullying and counseling, and cyber breach events with data recovery.

Higher plans add cyber security and privacy liability, third-party cyber liability, cryptocurrency cover and single-member LLC cover.

How do they compare side by side?

The table compares what a typical identity theft protection service does with what Syba personal cyber insurance does. Every Syba line responds under the terms of the issued policy.

When is identity theft protection enough?

If your one worry is that someone opens an account in your name and you want to be told quickly, monitoring alone may be what you need. If you also worry about ransomware on the family computer, an online fraud that drains an account, or a data breach, a monitoring service on its own leaves those risks without cover.

What does Syba add to monitoring?

Monitoring tells you something happened. Syba adds the people who help you act on it, and cover for the covered losses: a 24/7 cyber team you can call, a browser agent that flags fake sites, alerts when your email addresses show up in a data breach, and five minutes of training a month.

Plans run from $250K to $5M of cover, from $49 a month, and you can cancel any month with a prorated refund.

Questions people ask next

  • Does cyber insurance include identity theft?

Yes. Identity theft and recovery is a coverage line on every Syba plan. If your identity is stolen, the team helps you recover it and covered losses are handled under the policy.

  • Is identity theft protection free anywhere?

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission runs IdentityTheft.gov, where you can report identity theft and get a recovery plan at no charge. It is a reporting and recovery route, not insurance.

  • Does identity monitoring cover ransomware?

Monitoring services usually do not. Ransomware and extortion is a separate coverage line in Syba personal cyber insurance, and CISA publishes a free guide on responding to it.

  • What is not covered by Syba identity theft cover?

An identity theft event that began before your coverage started is not covered. Money a person chooses to send, even to a scammer, may not be covered either. The issued policy has the final word.

  • Can I have both identity monitoring and cyber insurance?

Yes, though Syba already includes alerts when your email addresses appear in a data breach, so many households find the two overlap. Compare what each one pays for before you pay twice.

  • Does my security score change what I pay?

No. A scan score is security context, nothing else. It never sets your price, your plan or your eligibility.
