What cyber insurance exists for individuals in Belgium?
Individuals in Belgium can insure against online fraud in three forms: account-fraud cover sold by banks, cyber add-ons to home insurance where offered, and standalone personal cyber policies. What each pays differs in its limit, deductible and exclusions, so read those before you choose. Syba sells the third form, with a 24/7 cyber helpdesk.
How much money is lost to phishing in Belgium?
Febelfin, the Belgian financial sector federation, reported on 4 August 2025, with research agency Indiville, that banks detect, block or recover 75% of the fraudulent transactions that result from phishing, and that around €49 million was stolen through phishing in Belgium in 2024.
Those figures describe phishing, one route among many. They show that bank controls stop a large share of it and that money still leaves households, which is the gap the three forms of cover below address in different ways.
What are the three forms of cover, and what does each leave out?
Each form answers a different question. The table sets them side by side; the right column is what to check, because limits and exclusions differ from one product to the next.
Some bank fraud covers list dating scams and online investment scams as not insured. Read the exclusions of any product, not just its headline.
| Form | What it typically covers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Account-fraud cover sold by banks | Money lost from the insured accounts through scams and fraud, up to a limit per claim. | The limit per claim, the deductible and which scams are excluded. |
| Cyber add-on to home insurance | A set of cyber events chosen by your home insurer, where the option is offered. | The limit, the covered events and who you call. |
| Standalone personal cyber policy | A wider set of cyber events, such as ransomware, extortion, identity theft and cyberbullying, with recovery help. | The exclusions, who counts as insured and how a claim starts. |
What does a personal cyber policy add?
A personal cyber policy covers the household, not just a bank account. Every Syba plan covers identity theft, cyber ransomware and extortion, online fraud and cyber crime, cyber bullying and counseling, and cyber breach events with data recovery, each under the terms of the issued policy.
Syba plans include a 24/7 cyber helpdesk and the Syba security app, and you can cancel any time from your dashboard. The table lists the plans sold for your region with their cover and monthly price.
| Plan | Cover | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | $250K | $49 |
| Gold | $500K | $75 |
| Platinum | $2M | $330 |
| Diamond | $5M | $1,125 |
| Diamond + | $5M | $2,250 |
What should you check before you buy?
Run the same seven checks on every option, whoever sells it.
The limit: how much is paid per claim, and in total.
The deductible: the part of a loss you carry yourself.
The excluded scams: some bank fraud covers list dating scams and online investment scams as not insured.
Payments you authorized yourself: some scams persuade you to make the transfer, so ask whether that case is covered and get the answer in writing.
Who counts as insured in the household: you, a partner, children, relatives who live with you.
How a claim starts: who you call and what evidence they need.
Cancellation terms: Syba plans can be cancelled any time; ask every provider for theirs.
What should you do if you have been phished?
Move quickly and in this order. Contact your bank to block your card or bank access, and follow its instructions. Keep the message, the web address, screenshots and your statements as evidence. Report what happened to the police.
Febelfin (2021) also asks the public to forward fraudulent messages to Safeonweb, the reporting point of the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB), which then has the suspect links in them blocked. Use the address shown on safeonweb.be for your language.
If you hold a Syba plan, call the team as well, so one person owns the case from the report to the outcome.
Questions people ask next
Is there cyber insurance for individuals in Belgium?
Yes. Belgian individuals can buy account-fraud cover through some banks, add cyber cover to home insurance where offered, or buy a standalone personal cyber policy. Limits, deductibles and exclusions differ a lot, so compare them before you choose.
What does cyber insurance for individuals usually cover?
Typically online fraud, identity theft, ransomware or extortion, and cyberbullying, with recovery help. Each policy lists what counts and what does not. Some bank fraud covers exclude dating and investment scams, so check the list.
Does it cover a transfer I made myself after a phone call from a fraudster?
It depends on the policy wording. Some scams persuade the victim to authorize the payment, so ask this exact question before you buy and get the answer in writing. With Syba, money a person chooses to send, even to a scammer, may not be covered, and the issued policy has the final word.
How much does cyber insurance cost for individuals in Belgium?
Prices depend on the limit. Syba plans run from $49 to $2,250 a month for $250K to $5M of cover, and the pricing page lists each one for your region. Bank-linked fraud cover can be priced per account. Compare the limit you get, not just the monthly price.
Does Syba pay if I am a victim of fraud?
Syba does not pay claims itself. Covered claims are paid by the carrier under the issued policy, and what is covered depends on your plan. Syba runs the response, and the policy is placed through the licensed channel for the jurisdiction. The claims page explains each step.
